Atmosphere – “Virgo” Official Performance | Vevo

Atmosphere – “Virgo” (Vevo Performance)

Twin Cities duo Slug and Ant release albums like they’re punching the clock at the office. As Atmosphere, the pair bring a workmanlike approach to their projects: ‘Mi Vida Local’ is their ninth album since 1997, with a few compilations and EP’s sandwiched between. Somehow Slug even manages to operate beloved hip-hop label, Rhymesayers Entertainment, home to underground heroes like Brother Ali, Dilated Peoples and Aesop Rock. Here, in an intimate setting at the Vevo studio, Slug takes on the current climate in America and his own mortality on the Zodiac-tinged “Virgo.” If it’s your birthday, blow out the candles but make sure you don’t waste your wish.

deM atlaS – “Bad Loves Company” Official Performance

deM atlaS – Bad Loves Company (Vevo Live Performance)

Joshua Evans is inspired by the likes of The Pharcyde, Bad Brains and Sarah McLachlan. Add in a dash of Kanye West and it’s easy to understand why the Minnesota native, who performs under the moniker deM atlaS, infuses his music with a mix of sharp-edged bars and bluesy vocals. Back in 2013 he dropped his debut EP ‘Charle Brwn,’ which highlighted his quirky affiliation for the Peanuts gang and earned him a spot on the Rhymesayers Entertainment roster. Since aligning with Slug and company, deM atlaS has released a string of critically acclaimed projects, such as his MF Doom collaborative mixtape, ‘MF Dem’. Earlier this year, his latest effort, ‘Bad Actress,’ arrived, which finds him bringing the force of his talents together across 15 tracks. Standouts include the swaying “Pneumonia,” “Gratitude” and “Bad Loves Company.” deM atlaS performed a live version of the latter track for us. Stripped of any accompaniments, his bounced through a stirring rendition. Check it out.

Mike Posner – Mike Posner’s Three Thoughts on Inner Happiness

Mike Posner’s Three Thoughts on Inner Happiness

“I just wanna unwind everything that makes me feel confined,” sings Mike Posner in his new video for “Song About You.” That thought kind of parallels the POV that the “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” singer put forward in our exclusive interview with him. Part of our ‘Three Thoughts’ series, this latest chat finds Posner explaining how crucial it is to reinvent yourself every few years. “Every two years or so I like to shatter the definition I’ve made for myself,” he explains. Posner recent gave up his cool guy LA existence for life on the road, literally living out of a van with a bed in the back. He’s known for his incisive candor; check “I suck at girls” from his latest album, ‘Tear Drops and Balloons.’ His search for true self is a fascinating first-hand profile. “For me it’s a peeling back of layers, and getting to who I really am.” Don’t miss his full explanation of finding inner happiness.

Amos Lee – “Little Light” Official Performance | Vevo

“Little Light” Official Performance | Vevo

Amos Lee has been one of our go-to singer-songwriters for more than a decade now. His lyrics always reveal some kind of truth that we all know but can’t exactly put into words, and his melodies are indelible. Settle into a Lee show, and soon you’ll see: whether its “Arms of a Woman,” “Sweet Pea” or “Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight,” the audience can’t helping singing along with their hero. “Little Light” was inspired by the perseverance of an eight-year-old girl who Lee met through the Melodic Caring Project, a group that steams concerts to kids who are quarantined because of illness. Watch him roll the song, which is from his new album, ‘My New Moon.’

Amy Shark – Three Thoughts…On Perserverance

Amy Shark has told interviewers that she wrote her first song as a form of therapy – forget about a hit or career, it was just a way for a teen to articulate her feelings while strumming the guitar. But the Aussie singer with the global reach, who has recently brought fans beloved tracks such as “Adore” and “I Said Hi,” did carry on and make a sizable impact. Her “Spits on Girls” turned lots of heads and got a buzz going in 2014. This year she dropped ‘Love Monster,’ an album full of catchy songs that unpack a wealth of emotions. Shark has referenced her music as “gritty pop” – it’s not a shiny as some of competition’s. But it is impactful. From a bedroom on the Gold Coast to taking home the Queensland Music award for Pop Song of the Year – nice trajectory. But moving forward and clocking victories can be slow going sometimes. As part of our ‘Three Thoughts’ series, we had Shark stop by to explain how perseverance is just as important as inspiration when it comes to sustaining a career in music.

Queen Naija – “Medicine” Official Performance | Vevo

My self-titled EP featuring “Karma” & “Medicine” is out now!!! Listen here : http://queennaija.lnk.to/EPYD

—–
“Medicine” Official Performance | Vevo

Look into the roots of strong R&B vocalists, and you may find they spent time singing in church. The modern soul approach of Queen Naija, which can be heard on tracks such as “Bad Boy,” “Mama’s Hand” and “Medicine,” is partially due to getting schooled early on – she was part of a choir as a child in her native Detroit. That was way before she became a YouTube hero, of course. For the last few years, she’s been pleasing fans by inviting them into her all aspects of her life as a wildly popular vlogger. Boasting three million subscribers, her YT channel has focused on delivering personal candor to an ever-growing fan base. When she and her husband split last year, it prompted her to hit the studio and not only vent some frustration but stand up for women everywhere. “Medicine” busted the the 22-year-old to the next level success that she’s riding right now. Her follow-up track on the same subject, “Karma,” is just as revealing, with a message attached. “I’m just letting him know, I might be sad right now, you might be happy, but the table’s gonna turn. While it makes me feel good that other women can relate to what i’m writing,” she said during our recent performance/interview, “it makes me feel bad that they have to go through it.” Watch our exclusive performance of “Medicine” right now and share it with other Naija fans.

Loren Gray – Three Thoughts…On Breakups

Yes, she’s a YouTube hero, pop culture celeb and social media influencer, but remember the realm where Loren Gray got her start: music.ly. So between the makeup tutorials and candid friends ‘n’ fam moments, this Teen Choice Award nominee has turned her lip-singing into interpretations of her favorite hits and recently, a full-on career as an artist. Which only seems right. Check the fun at the center of Gray’s “My Story,” and you’ll hear the reason that so many of her fans swoon when it comes up on the playlist. We had a chance to hang with Gray, so we had her come in an share some of her experience discussing breakups. “Bad relationships are good for you,” she declares at the start. See what happens when she speaks about becoming more cautious and confident after a romance goes sideways.

Mason Ramsey – “Famous” Official Performance | Vevo

Ya gotta start somewhere. Mason Ramsey kicked things off at a Walmart in southern Illinois. Earlier this summer, a video of the 11-year-old singing Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues” in the store aisle went viral, and between his interpretive skills and his off-the-charts cuteness, he’s become a recording artist. Ramsey has been singing and yodeling for a while, actually. He’s participated in regional talent contests and earned a area-wide buzz, starting his Hank homages at the age of four. The woman who captured his Walmart performance had shot him previously in other locales. Since that now-famous gig, he’s been on ‘Ellen’, performed at the Grand Ole Opry, and even shared the Coachella stage with EDM artist Whethan. Now he’s signed to Atlantic records. He came by Vevo to sing a couple of non-Hank tunes, “Famous” and “The Way I See It,” and his voice and charisma were both enormous.

Sabrina Carpenter – “Almost Love” Official Performance

“Almost Love” Official Performance

We were knocked out by the raw talent of a formidable youngster on ‘Eyes Wide Open,’ and deeply impressed by the pop savvy that marked the music of ‘EVOLution.’ Sabrina Carpenter has been making advances since the moment we met her, and as we wait for her upcoming ‘Singular’ album, one thing’s obvious. Her skills continue to grow. Now 19, Carpenter seems far away from her early-teen girlishness. Watch her in the video for “Almost Love” and you’ll see a grown-up woman having grown-up fun. Pay attention to the track’s details and you’ll be even more impressed. Carpenter’s vocals are wisely sculpted and impressively rendered. The talent driving that voice is unmistakable in the stripped-down performance she turned in when she recently visited Vevo. With just a guitar accompanying her, Carpenter lifts the song into the sky. It’s a thing of beauty, and a hint at what we’ll be hearing when ‘Singular’ arrives.
